Denshi Sentai Denziman

Plot
3000 years ago, the Vader Clan devastated Denzi Star. Denziland, an island from Denzi Star, landed on Earth. In modern times, the computer of Denziland awoke the Denzidog IC when it detected the Vader Clan approaching Earth. IC found five young people (who may or may not be descendants of the Denzi people) to become the Denzimen in order to defend Earth, the Vader Clan's next target. The Denzimen begin a long record of success with the defeat of Vader Monster number 00, Flying Squirreler.

As the battle escalates, they realize that they themselves may be descendants of the Denzi people. If so, they are not alone; other descendants do exist, scattered around the Earth. Queen Hedrian, struggling in her attempts to make the world a living nightmare, receives an offer of assistance from the space wanderer Omnipotent Demon King. She accepts it, not realizing that ODK's real goal is the conquest of Earth for himself. He captures the Vader Castle, and torments the Denzimen with his Omnipotent Monse. Hedrer goes into battle himself giant-sized, only to die. The Denzimen find themselves helpless against ODK and his monster until IC sacrifices himself to become a circuit for the DaiDenzin. When news of the invasion reaches the Galactic Union Patrol, Space Sheriff Gavan is dispatched to address the threat. Riding in on the space cruiser Dolgiran, Gavan looks like a normal human with a bad haircut. Hidden under all that hair however is a highly skilled warrior with the ability to call upon the power of Jouchaku where silver armor fuses to Gavan's body in .05 seconds flat. Once in the battle suit, Gavan may thrust forward like an avenging angel and attack with a hail of punches, kicks, spiral kicks, and sword slashes.

The PS2 game follows the storyline of the television series with missions that are based on key events of the 44-episode show. As a bonus for Space Sheriff fans, Shaider and Sharivan are also in the game for a healthy dosage of tokusatsu love. In the first scenario, Gavan rescues a young lad named Youichi from a group of Crushers.

Game Notes
» In the intro to the game, Gavan in a tan jacket gesticulates, raises his arms to the air and then transforms into his metal suit wearing alter-ego, Space Sheriff Gavan. In the next scene, he's on the street and fighting with a masked thug. Additional action sequences follow that look as hokey as anything from 50s and 60s television. However, Gavan was an early 80s show. The tan jacket that the hero wears appears to be made of velour and he appears to have an afro - a mini Asiatic afro.
» Press START and seven missions appear on the screen but only the first mission is playable. To view the other game modes, press the L1 or R1 trigger to page through them.

» In Mission Mode, a voice over sets up the story while images of deep space appear with ships flying through the ether. The camera switches to an image of a purple vortex which turns red and a Makku ship emerges. The ship looks like a cornucopia horn. Inside, a demonic overlord named Don Horror is instructing his kneeling henchmen that their time has come and the complete domination of the universe beckons. The evil agents hail their leader and a small ship emerges from the larger ship to wreak havoc on Earth. The camera changes to a view of Gavan's ship coursing through space and heading towards Earth before landing. His ship is the Dolgiron and looks like the Enterprise from the Star Trek. The next scenes are taken from the television show where the events of the show are spooled off in quick sequence. Once the game begins, Gavan is standing near a building with traffic cones to the left of it. Three Crushers surround him and a little boy named Youichi. As the goons are defeated with a staccato of punches, reinforcements rush in to take their place. The goons attack with knives and also raise a ruckus with their acrobatic moves. They're trying to grab the boy but once one lays hands on Youichi, punch the Crusher and he'll let go while the little tyke just stands there, apparently unaware of the imminent danger.

» After defeating the Crushers, Youichi and a girl in blue dress run into the distance away from danger. The fight is followed by a pre-rendered sequence where Gavan beats up a few goons and interacts with the enemy before the next wave of attackers rush into battle. This time, they're joined by a white-shelled creature with red dots who has a humanoid body underneath the shell. After seemingly defeating it, another cut scene plays where the Don Horror instructs his henchmen to transport Gavan and the creature to a nether area where they battle one on one. In the battle, the creature hunkers down and moves around quickly while hitting Gavan like a battering ram.

» In his human form, Gavan can throw out 4-hit punch combos along with 8-hit combos. His attacks aren't strong but since they can be thrown in a flurry, they do the job. If Gavan jumps and attacks, he'll perform dainty kick attacks where he flies up like a ballerina and yells out, "Chyuu!" After defeating the shelled beast in the first level of Mission Mode, a humanoid appears who attacks with a scimitar of sorts with a yellow hand protector. He's a pushover. After defeating the two, Gavan is back on earth and some television stills are shown of him riding a horse, working on a farm, playing with children, and basically enjoying life without the threat of death around the corner. After the first mission is over, the game ranks your performance and awards a letter grade to rank your skills, time taken to complete the mission, and enemies walloped.

» In the next scene, Gavan is practicing his sword fighting with Professor Kom who is Mimi's father. Mimi is Galvan's assistant. The professor carries a shield in his left hand and flies around the battlefield with sprightly jumps. Despite carrying a shield, Professor Kom can't parry many blows and it's a breeze to beat up the guy and punch him around like a rag doll. It's also possible to kick away his shield so that he's left defenseless against a younger, more brutish sword handler. After the battle, Kom addresses Gavan and tells him to steel himself for the upcoming storm.

» The missions in Space Sheriff Spirits don't always involve Gavan. The subsequent mission features the goofy UFO junkie Kojiro who is running from a humanoid with the head of a triceratops. Maneuver Kojiro around the jungle in order to avoid the pursuer. When running away, he makes pathetic noises while the enemy grabs and throws rocks and barrels at him. The goal is to survive the assault for 1:10 minutes. If you succeed, Kojiro will get to run away like a mongrel and the game will proceed. In the next scene, more stills from the television series are shown where Mimi and Gavan share a tender moment before Gavan has to resume his campaign against the Makku. As he leaves, a still photo of Mimi is shown with tears flowing.

» In Versus Mode, the character selection screen only features Gavan and his alter-ego as playable fighters but 8 more champions are cloaked in shadows and may be unlocked. A total of 17 monsters (4 shown, the rest in shadown waiting to be unlocked) may be battled in VS Mode. After defeating each creature, they blow up in a shower of yellow sparks.

» The action in Space Sheriff Spirits won't set anyone's world on fire... except maybe for diehard fans of the television series. The graphics are dated, the action is routine, and SSS brings nothing new to the 3D punch 'n kick table. However, there is no other game in existence which will allow you to control Gavan. None. If you've been waiting over 2 decades for Gavan to make it to video game form, here's your chance.
